Jason Clarke delivers a compelling innovation message for leaders navigating increasingly complex operating environments at the latest SFI Connect Series Webinar.
At today’s SFI Connect Series Webinar (18 November), Jason Clarke from Minds at Work, discussed how innovation is not defined by disruptive breakthroughs, but by the consistent, disciplined pursuit of improvement.
He stated, that for most organisations, progress is achieved not through revolution but through targeted, meaningful enhancements to the way work gets done. However, as Jason noted, improvement requires change, and it is change, not innovation itself, that typically generates resistance.

Jason underscored the importance of clarity when pursuing innovation. Introducing something new does not inherently create value. Organisations must define what “better” means in operational terms, articulate the benefits they expect to see, and establish how those outcomes will be measured. Without this alignment, businesses risk implementing changes that consume time and resources without delivering tangible improvement.
A critical insight from Jason’s presentation was the value of engaging those closest to the work. Employees at the frontline often possess the deepest understanding of inefficiencies and opportunities within operational processes. When organisations empower these individuals to contribute insights and ideas, they unlock an internal source of pragmatic, high-impact innovation that cannot be replicated through top-down directives alone.

Culture also plays a fundamental role. Jason also outlined that innovation requires a sequence of distinct cognitive strengths; idea generation, planning, evaluation and execution. No single individual excels at all four. High-performing organisations recognise this and intentionally bring together diverse thinking styles at the appropriate stages of the innovation lifecycle. This structured approach ensures ideas are not only created, but also operationalised with discipline and accountability.
Jason closed the event with a reminder that innovation is not optional in a rapidly changing business landscape. Industries are continually reshaped by those who identify emerging opportunities and act decisively. Every process and system within a business has a more efficient, more effective version waiting to be realised. The organisations that thrive will be those that proactively seek these improvements rather than waiting to be overtaken by external forces. In this context, innovation becomes not an initiative, but a strategic necessity.
