R U OK Day? Building Stronger Workplaces Through Conversation

SFI Australia and the ATOM Group are dedicated to keeping the Australian mining, construction and fabrication sectors moving, with the equipment and logistics people need to get the job done safely and efficiently.

However, on R U OK? Day, our focus shifts from the tools, to the people behind them.

This year, our teams are proudly coming together on September 10th to recognise R U OK? Day. A day dedicated to reminding everyone that a simple conversation can make a life-changing difference.

The initiative encourages Australians to check in with friends, family and colleagues, asking one simple question: “Are you OK?”

It’s a conversation that doesn’t require all the answers, just genuine care, a willingness to listen and the courage to start the discussion.

Why It Matters in Our Industries

Mining, construction and fabrication are industries built on resilience, hard work and teamwork. They are also industries where long hours, physically demanding work, remote locations, tight deadlines and time away from family can take a significant toll on mental health.

Traditionally, these industries have been male dominated, and for many years there has been an unspoken expectation to “push through” challenges without talking about how you’re feeling. While that culture is changing, many workers still find it difficult to reach out when they’re struggling.

That’s why initiatives like R U OK? Day are so important.

More Than One Day

At SFI we believe looking after each other isn’t something reserved for one day on the calendar. It should be part of every toolbox meeting, every site visit, every lunch break and every conversation between mates.

Whether it’s checking in with a colleague who’s been unusually quiet, asking a teammate how they’re really going, or simply making time to listen without judgement, those small moments can have a lasting impact.

Strong workplaces are built on more than productivity and performance – they’re built on trust, respect and genuine care for the people who make the work possible.

A Conversation Could Change a Life

On September 10th we will be coming together as a reminder that every person has a role to play in creating safer, healthier workplaces. Mental health isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s part of being human.

If someone comes to mind today, don’t wait. Ask the question, listen and be there. Because one conversation really could change a life.

From everyone at SFI Australia and the ATOM Group, thank you to our staff, customers and industry partners for helping create workplaces where everyone feels supported, not just on R U OK? Day, but every day.
